Agenda:
* Continue discussion of future consortium goals.
* Report on progress from D2L on availability of internal design
and documentation guidelines.
* Any further planning for AHG at this point?
July 25 meeting notes:
Participants:
* Hadi Bargi-Rangin (UIUC)
* Greg Beckman (D2L)
* Nolan Crabb (OSU)
* Sandra Earl (D2L)
* Christie Gilson (UIUC)
* Dave Lockhart (D2L)
* Ken Petri (OSU, scribe)
Action Items (Future):
* Shorten Fusion presentation for AHG in the Fall (will be ready
for a Fall meeting).
* Greg will compile D2L design and development documents together
for the group (for meeting after next, need to see if NDA is
necessary).
Notes:
* Agreed that the format of the presentation and presentation
generally worked well at Fusion. We had around 20 people attending. We
can use parts of that presentation at Accessing Higher Ground in
November. Format of that panel will be different, since we will have
Terry Thompson and a rep. reporting on accessibility work of
Blackboard and Mike Elledge (and others?) reporting on Sakai, in
addition to Sandra E. and Ken (minimally, maybe more?) on D2L, along
with Hadi. So it's a full panel. We can give out a shortened version
in the Fall.
* Goals for the future of the consortium:
0 "Creating Accessible Content" documentation developed.
0 Would like to begin review of D2L's internal design and
documentation documents.
0 Either a trip or other sort of meeting with D2L (possibility
of meeting with Dave Lockhardt at AHG) for Hadi and Ken (others?) to
hold face-to-face discussions.
0 Use Joe's work in user testing as a basis for developing a set
of user testing protocols and scales for "grading" accessibility of
D2L interfaces.
0 Future full-matrix review of product (following role out of
future updates)
* Hadi's long term goal: D2L has done a lot for accessibility but
we should also get involved coding practices.
* Dave L.: a lot of stuff built into the development framework--alt
text, labeling, design best practices on functional documentation;
* Greg something we can definitely collaborate on; consortium can
look at the materials that go out to the product designers and review
and look for places to improvement. Input on the design process--not
just the coding but also page layout and general usability and design
issues.
* Hadi: interested in tools being used to warn about problems. A
tool's understanding of accessibility is not necessarily mine or
Christie's.
* Cristie: consider hiring someone with a disability.
* Sandra: we have used outside contractors for some usability testing.
* Hadi: not a lot of trust in contractors.
* Sandra: not a near term hire of a person with a disability, but
something we will defintely push for.
* Greg: prototype views will be forthcoming for review.
Note: Ken is on vacation and will not be on the Friday call.
Best,
ken
