Dear Colleagues:
In early 2006, we began research to answer the following: how many US
and Canadian institutions have/have had some form of a
writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) initiative, and what forms do these
efforts take? You may recall this request, which was published on the
Writing Program Administrators listserv (WPA-L) and the
writing-across-the-curriculum listserv (WAC-L). Some 110 institutions
replied at that time.
We are attempting to reach every institution of higher education in this
survey in order to give responsible answers to these frequently-asked
questions. If you have not already completed the survey, we would
appreciate your answering the following:
http://writingprogram.ucdavis.edu/survey.htm
It will take you approximately 10 minutes to complete the survey.
If you are not the best person at your institution to complete the
survey, PLEASE forward it to the correct respondent.
While we would appreciate you completing the entire survey, it is
especially important that you answer these questions: “Does your
institution have, or has it had in the past, an initiative or program
dedicated to student writing across disciplines (e.g., WAC or WID)?” and
“If ‘no,’ does your institution have plans to begin such a program?”
This is the first time so comprehensive a survey of
writing-across-the-curriculum involvement has been attempted, and the
first time in ten years for any national survey of
writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) and writing-in-the-disciplines (WID)
initiatives. Every institution that is considering beginning or
modifying a WAC/WID component will benefit from these results. If you
wish to be notified of the results of this survey, please so indicate on
the survey.
We appreciate in advance your participation in this important research.
Sincerely,
Chris Thaiss and Tara Porter
