We have written a tutorial and some JavaScript controls that we hope will
help (and inspire!) you caption your YouTube videos. Here is the page:
http://wac.osu.edu/examples/youtube-player-controls/
The tutorial covers conventions and tools for captioning, but it
concentrates on Accessify's Easy YouTube Caption
Creator<http://accessify.com/tools-and-wizards/accessibility-tools/easy-youtube-caption-creator/>,
a super simple, free, online tool for captioning YouTube videos. (Note that
the tool outputs into SubViewer caption format. On our page we have a link
to a script that will convert from SubViewer to SubRip. We recommend SubRip
for better control over the appearance of your YouTube captions. There's
more on this in our tutorial.)
In addition to the tutorial, we link to some JavaScript that will allow you
to very easily embed YouTube movies in your web pages in a way that is fully
accessible to screen readers and keyboard users. The JavaScript embeds the
YouTube player and, optionally, creates a playlist of videos--which can come
in handy if you need to segment longer videos or have a video series you
would like to keep all together. It allows access to the video controls and
playlist through HTML links, rather than the typical Flash controls (you can
still use those, of course). This gets around the accessibility problems of
Flash-based YouTube player.
You can style the player controls to fit the look and feel of your web site.
A default style sheet is included as an example.
Best,
ken
